Symmetry and Group Theory is a powerful theoretical tool to study and predict chemical bonding and spectral properties of molecules. It is only in last three decades that chemists are making use of this tool to understand the fundamental concepts involved in bonding and structure of organic and inorganic compounds.
Symmetry and group theory is part of Chemistry syllabus of undergraduate as well as postgraduate classes in almost every Indian University and College. I have been teaching this subject since last 22 years. Of course, group theory is a mathematical concept but there should not be any fear of mathematics because the job of a chemist here is to utilize the results of the group theory for chemical problems and not to derive them. However, some basic knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, matrices, etc. is essentially required because the language of modern scientific knowledge is going to be mathematical. The modern scientific knowledge has a theoretical basis of Quantum Mechanics which involves rigorous mathematical calculations, but parallel to quantum mechanics, Symmetry and Group Theory simplify the complex quantum mechanical derivations considerably in a very fascinating manner to arrive at the same conclusions. Quantum Mechanics and Group theory in chemistry, both are predictive sciences and the great scientist Richard Feynman said, “The basis of science is its ability to predict”. To predict means to tell what will happen in an experiment that has never been done before. That`s why the subject of Symmetry and Group Theory is very charming to learn and predict the various chemical, physical and spectroscopic properties of the compounds. ISBN - 9788122434132
