The Autobiography is not merely the story of Swami Dayanand`s life, it is also a portrait of the India of his times. It seeks to explain how in those days of India`s despondency, her great sons stove hard to "dispel the darkness of ignorance engulfing the minds of the millions of her sons, and demolish the shibboleths of superstitiion, falsehood, bigotry, sedulously built over centuries by a supine ecclesiastical order." It also presents an assessment of their efforts to effect reconstruction of the society on scientific and rational lines thereby making it fit for attaining its political emancipation. The Autobiography consists of three fragments written between 1875 and 0879. The frist fragment is an account of Dayanand`s early life, education and activities until 1845 which he wrote in Hindi for The Theosophist. The second fragment, extending his life story to 1875, is a narrative of what he related at the instance of his friends and admirers at Poona in August 1875. The third, My Beliefs and Disbeliefs is an exposition of his philosophy and thought. Dr Yadav`s introductory note puts Swamiji and the Arya Samaj in a clear perspective.ISBN - 8178710021 , 9788178710020
