"Trade remedial measures refer to rules that permit governments to apply anti dumping, countervailing and safeguard measures. Today, the trade remedial measures have become the most favoured non-tariff measure to promote the interests of the domestic industry for most of the WTO members. Imposition of duties such as anti dumping, countervailing or safeguard duties has an important bearing on the trading decisions. While these duties levied provisionally or finally, definitely make the imports costlier from such sources, even a mere initiation of investigation scares away the importers.

Considering the proliferation of the use of trade remedial measures, it is most appropriate that an assessment is made about the impact these measures are having on the Indian economy. These measures impact the price realization by domestic industry, which has the opposite effect on user industry or consumer; there is likely to be significant impact on sales volume, turnover, employment, inventory etc. which need to be examined and quantified. It is with the objective of making an assessment of the impact of these measures that this study has been undertaken. The basic objective of the study is to evaluate the economic impact of trade remedial measures in terms of various economic parameters like domestic producers` profitability, trade chilling and trade diversion effects, production and location pattern changes, adequacy and efficacy of these measures in protecting legitimate interests of domestic industry."
