This work, originally published in 1899 and 1900, in two volumes, gives the history of British activities in the east, right from the first British steps here. The work starts with short notices on the medieval history of the European nation in Asia. It then assumes a more detailed form, and what follows is the labour of one of the biggest names in Indian historical research : W. W. Hunter. This work is singular in a way that it studies the growth of the British Empire by including the development of the other European interests in Asia too, and gives a detailed history of the first two centuries of European commerce and politics in Asia. The first volume ends in 1623, with the overthrow of the English in the spice archipelago; the second, and concluding volume ends in 1708, when the old and the new East India Companies were merged into one company under the Earl of Godolphin’s award.
