[…..] from beyond the wood, there came a weird humming sound, being all upon one low noted; which gew nerer and louder, coming soon in a sort of short, rapid measure, produced with demoniac, violence and sometimes accented with a prolonged, hoarse, rasping hiss, which yet was not a hiss, but something far more dreadful”
After the popularity of Ghost Stories from the Raj resulted in a number of requests for more stories from this period. Ruskin Bond delved into his archives and came up with another entertaining collection of strange or `nightmarish` tales written by Englishmen who came to India and the East Indies in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
‘’’ It is fear, Mr. Holmes. It is terroe.’’ She raised her veil as she spoke and we could see that she was indeed in a pitiable state of agitation, her face all drawn and gray, with restless, frightened wyes, like those of some hunted animal.’
In Rendezvous with Horroe, Ruskin Bond complies some popular tales featuring the strange and unexplained – the sudden disappearance of accursed statue in “ The face of Bronze”, mysterious foot steps in a “ When Glister Walked”; the haunted country house in “ All Souls” and suspicious murder of Julia Stoner in the Adventure of the Speckled Band”- in a spine- chilling collection.
