Description: Is data analysis (based on modern scientific methodology) really so promising in helping us understand reality better that, as Auguste Comte (1853) once famously wrote, "[t]he law is this: that each of our leading conceptions, each branch of our knowledge, passes successively through three different theoretical conditions: the Theological, or fictitious; the Metaphysical, or abstract; and the Scientific, or positive"?

However, this blank check of data analysis (based on modern scientific methodology) can be contrasted with an opposing view in our time, as Thomas Kuhn equally made a name of himself in arguing that the progress of scientific methodology over time does not lead to a truer understanding of reality but only reflects "paradigm shifts" for different worldviews. (WK 2011)

Contrary to these conflicting views (and other ones as will be discussed in the book), data analysis (in relation to both quantitative and qualitative research) is neither possible nor desirable to the extent that the respective ideologues (on different sides) would like us to believe.

This challenge to these diverse views about data analysis does not mean, however, that data analysis is useless, or that those fields of study (related to data analysis) like methodology, epistemology, philosophy of science, psychology, linguistics, mathematics, logic, sociology, anthropology, and so on should be ignored too. Of course, neither of these extreme views is reasonable.

Instead, this book provides an alternative (better) way to understand the future of data analysis, especially in the dialectic context of quantitative and qualitative research—while learning from different approaches in the literature but without favoring any one of them (nor integrating them, since they are not necessarily compatible). In other words, this book offers a new theory (that is, the complex theory of data analysis).

If successful, this seminal project is to fundamentally change the way that we think about data analysis, from the combined perspectives of the mind, nature, society, and culture, with enormous implications for the human future and what the author originally called its "post-human" fate.
