The investigating agencies including Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are supposed to enforce the laws equitably, impartially, firmly and strictly. But unfortunately these have failed to storm the citadel of corrupt high and mighty, because of their own constricted mindset that they have to guard the privileged. The agencies, now-a-days, feel helpless, directionless and in a way almost non-functional when it affects the higher echelons of the society, particularly in corruption related cases. The author was a witness to a peculiar shocking drama of the arrest of the renowned spiritual leader godman Chandraswamy. When the author was asked to execute at Madras the non-bailable warrants issued by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Delhi since he was the head (Joint Director) of the CBI`s south zone. After a long hustle and bustle throughout the night of 2nd May 1996, godman Chandraswamy along with his associate was arrested and sent to Delhi by plane in the custody of CBI team. The compliance of the matter was reported to the Director Vijay Rama Rao, who thanked the author profusely for handling the matter tactfully with utmost speed. Unfortunately, the reward role submitted by the author for the approval of the Director never saw the light of the day. On the other hand, when the author checked up the status of the matter from Anand Kumar, Joint Director, he remarked, The warrant was sent to you, but you were not expected to act. Such inside realities of CBI have now become common and it now acts as a tool of the ruling political masters. After joining Indian Police Service, the author traces the journey of his career of nearly four decades from home town Patna to Tamil Nadu, thereafter to New Delhi and back. The author has highlighted many ups and downs faced by him initially in CBI and the important corruption cases including that of Ms Jayalalithaa, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Taj corridor probe of Mayawati, Assets case of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi and many more. While working in Tamil Nadu Police, he has captured the police history of that state from the 70s till mid 2000 in great detail. Law and order issues, Naxalism, caste and communal riots, LTTE, VVIP visits and major bandobasts as well as big crimes detected by the state CB CID and CBI are narrated with great gusto. In addition to above, the author has a rich collection of anecdotes concerning the investigating departments. Some of these strewn right through the book make it interesting, informative and source of inspiration for the future generation of police officers and administrators.
