Gardens Of The Moon (Malazan Book Of The Fallen #1), published in 1999, is the first of The Malazan Book of the Fallen series, which has a total of ten epic fantasy stories. This first book revolves around the Malazan Empire, and how the city of Darujhistan is being attacked. Gardens Of The Moon (Malazan Book Of The Fallen #1) starts with Emperor Kellanved’s last year in power, just before he is assassinated. It also shows how Ganoes Paran, a young lad, is eager to become a soldier when he becomes an adult. The story moves a few years forward, and Empress Laseen is now the head of the Empire. She aims to take over the continent of Genabackis, and uses a group of assassins called Claw to conquer the land. There are only two free cities remaining, of which Pale is being protected by Anomander Rake.
However, after a terrible war with the Empire, Rake withdraws. The Empress takes over the city of Pale, but her troops have suffered some major losses. The common people are eager for all the battles to end as essential resources are getting wasted. Laseen is still keen on gaining control over the last remaining free city of Darujhistan. Soon, it becomes clear that the Gods and other evil forces are joining the battle. Captain Paran tries to find out why such magical forces are becoming involved in Malazan Empire’s struggle to gain power.
Gardens Of The Moon (Malazan Book Of The Fallen #1) is filled with twists and turns, and has a very unique plot. It weaves in dark magic, mythology, and incredibly powerful storytelling. The characters are well developed, making this book a very interesting read.
