Description: This collection presents a cross-section of views on trends and issues of concern at the beginning of a new millennium and originates from a meeting of Translation Studies scholars from around the world. The chapters follow a personal agenda set by the well-known translation scholar Peter Newmark in a paper delivered at a symposium to celebrate the presentation of his Liber Amicorum, Word, Text, Translation.

The present volume is divided into two parts. The first, a record of the discussion stimulated by Peter Newmark’s paper and starting with his own summary, captures some of the interest, excitement and controversy of the day. The second part provides scope for invited colleagues to develop his chosen topics, the full version of his own paper setting the scene: The Nature of Translation; Types and Kinds of Translation; Valid and Deficient Texts; English as the Lingua Franca of Translation; Social Translation and Interpreting; Later Modes of Translation; The Assessment of Translation; and The University and the Market. The contributions take us through both familiar and new territory, from untranslatability to new forms of translation and their social relevance. Additional contributions from international translation scholars such as Stuart Campbell, Juliane House and Kirsten Malamkjaer further enhance the attraction of this volume as a litmus of thinking on Translation Studies at the start of a new millennium.
