One of the seventeen satellites sent into the atmosphere to bring back samples of dust and organisms for study falls in the Piedmont region of Arizona. Soon the shocking discovery is made that all the members of the team dispatched to retrieve the probe have died and also the entire population of the surrounding area have either died or driven mad. The infected satellite and the two survivors of Piedmont are taken to the secret underground Wildfire laboratory where further experiments are conducted to better understand the nature of the dangerous microbe. With the findings, the team of four scientists must attempt to save the planet from this unprecedented threat.

The Andromeda Strain has been featured in The New York Times Bestseller List. In 1971 it had been adapted as an eponymous film by Robert Wise. It was also made into a miniseries in 2008.
