Before the takeover Jaguar Land Rover was owned by Ford and wasn`t doing very well. Jaguar wasn`t selling much and Land Rover was struggling in a time when SUVs were seen as brash and socially unacceptable forms of transport. They also had a particularly dodgy reliability reputation. Ray unravels how, in an ironic twist, an Indian automaker took over the reins and nursed the proud British brand back to health. Naturally, the world was apprehensive. What was this little known company from India going to do with a legendary luxury automobile brand? However by then Tata already owned 18 businesses in the UK including iconic tea brand Tetley and had just completed a very public takeover of Anglo-Dutch steel giant Corus. Ratan Tata assured the press who thronged at the Tata stall at the Geneva Motor show in 2008 that Tata wouldn`t mess with the image and identity of Jaguar but simply help it grow and grow with it themselves. Ray goes on to talk about how Ratan Tata was the driving force behind the Rs 1250cr deal and the effects of the economic downturn. Ray delves into the future of the range that lay in vehicles like the Evoque, the F-type and the new Range Rover that would help change the identity of the company to a fresh, innovative and exciting brand. Five years down the line and the takeover is a roaring success with JLR posting sales numbers like never before. Profits have hit record levels and the growth projection is quite literally off the charts. Enjoy the journey through this well written and straightforward book filled with some of the most accurately formed opinions in the industry.
