H. H. Wilson is a highly respected name in Indian scholarship, and was president of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, in the early 1810`s. in the 3 volume work, edited by R. Rost, the author offers his study and critical remarks on various work of Sanskrit literature, and related aspects. Volume 1 first analysis the Purans (the Brahma, Padma, Agni, Vishnu, BrahmaVaivartta, and the Vayu Purans). Then follow essays on Kathasaritasagara, the medical and surgical sciences, three extracts from the Mahabharata ( the first day`s battle, passage of arms at Hastinapur, and Draupadi`s choice); the volume concludes with Dasakumaracharita. Volume two gives analytical accounts of the Panchtantra, and extracts from the Dasakumaracharita (the histories of : Rajavahana, Apaharavarma, Upaharavarma, Arthapala, Pramati, Mitragupta, and Dhumini). The concluding volume discusses Hindu law as practiced in Bengal, a review if the Bhagwat Gita, and Max Muller`s ˜History of Sanskrit Literature`.
