Ever since the dawn of civilization in the country, various cults and creeds had emerged on the Indian religious horizon. While some of them vanished in the place of their origin, as suddenly as they had mushroomed. Some of them disappeared having lost their relevance in due course of time, still some continued to be followed even to the present times. The cult of Vinayaka happens to be one of them. Though Vinayaka, also called Ganesa, appeared over the Indian religious horizon at a comparatively later state, primarily as a god who could create obstacle, but gradually he was conceived to be the bestower of the success as well.
This is a sort of encyclopaedic work in which an attempt has been made to discuss the salient features connected with the cult of Vinayaka, its genesis and evolution, from the earliest times, as highlighted in texts and the works of art.
