Disasters whether Natural or man-made are causing a great loss to all sorts of life-human beings, plants, animals and resources-buildings infrastructure and above all cause psychological problems. Disasters are increasing with the move to material civilization, urbanization, industrialization and greed. With this new cult, ever natural disasters are occurring because of the disturbances in natural equilibrium caused by the greed and lust of human beings to exploit resources to get rich quickly. National disasters are increasing every year. Besides natural disasters like floods, earthquakes and disasters created by climate changes, we are witnessing disasters created by human beings themselves like HIV/AlDs, Slums, Chemical disasters, Epidemics, Ethnic conflicts and violence, Terrorism which is more dangerous than natural disasters as these are of daily occurrences. Such disasters do not allow the country to flourish. There is an immediate need for initiating action of various levels by all concerned on this issue in order to streamline and improve our disaster preparedness and response capacities. The issue of communication, flow of information, role clarity of various organizations and agencies involved, networking involvement of the panchayats and strong interface amongst various government departments, institutions, etc. are equally important. All the citizens especially students in schools, colleges and universities must be educated in the art and science of disaster administration so that we can cope with the fury of natural and man-made disasters. Government has to change their policies so that through disaster control, sustainable development becomes a reality.
