This volume seeks to engage itself with a critical understanding of changes taking place both at structural and cultural levels in the north-east of India, which has been studied more for its instances of militancy, insurgency and terrorism. Significant changes such as the growth of a middle class, accentuation of socio-economic inequalities, sharpening of the ethnic/cultural identities, changing demographic structure, deepening of the process of democratization, weakening of the principle of egalitarianism and the gradual entrenchment of the principle of hierarchy and others are examined in the volume. Besides this, responses of communities to both agencies and processes of social changes are the subject matter of incisive analysis. The development model, which has been introduced in the north-east without taking into account the sensitivities and sensibilities of communities leading to eruption of feelings of discontent and alienation, is also critically evaluated. Thus, this volume fills a huge gap in the existing scholarly literature on the North-East India. ISBN 9788131604861
