Rajasthan`s art and architecture has been united by popular culture to become synonymous with havelis – courtyard house that are often dilapidated, characterised by peeling paint and an air of nostalgia. Bringing the past into colourful present is Kamal Morarka – industrialist, former statesman, and wildlife photographer – who has restored that haveli of his ancestors and created a museum for visitor who want to look beyond gilded doors into the lives of people past. This museum, an open-air art gallery, forms the subject of Morarka`s coffee-table book called Painted Heritage, which is resplendent with double spread images of frescoes, detailed views of the cusped arches, stone pillars and Jamia kanch (mirror –encrusted) doors.
