Edward Canon Sell is one of the chief authorities on Mohammedanism, and has written extensively on Islam. His most read books include The Faith of Islam (London, 3d ed.); The Historical Development of the Qur`an (2d ed.); Essays on Islam; Islam: its Rise and Progress; The Religious Orders of Islam; The Khulafa`r-Rashidun; The Cult of Ali; The Battles of Badr and Uhud; Al-Qur`an; Sufiism; The Druaes; and Ghazwas and Siriyaa. Sell was appointed as a fellow of Madras University and he received a Bachelor of Divinity from Lambeth in 1881. Sell received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Edinburgh University in 1907.
