This book, which is written by those who specialise in or are closely involved in the field of business ethics, seeks, first, to highlight how important it is for companies to address ethical issues and, second, how firms can in practice go about addressing those issues. It is in four parts.
Part 1 sets the scene. It looks at how the new economy has brought great complexity to the business environment, changing the ethical dimension and raising new ethical issues. It goes on to outline attitudes and approaches to ethics on both sides of the Atlantic, and how organisations have gone about integrating an ethical framework into their business.
Part 2 examines the interface between individuals and organisations. It explores the concept of ethical fitness and the role of leadership. It highlights the importance of effective corporate governance structures and gives guidance on how an organisation can define and clarify its purpose and values.
Part 3 looks at the ethical problems, such as corruption, that companies may face and the issues, such as those connected with the supply chain, that they need to address when doing business internationally, especially in emerging economies.
Part 4 shows how organisations can develop and implement codes of ethics, and it examines the auditing approaches that can be used by companies seeking to account for their ethical standards and behaviour. Lastly, it looks at the role of an industry regulator in setting and enforcing ethical standards, and in getting businesses to raise their ethical game.
