Helena was born to Maryian and Wanda Pokomichi at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit on July 22, 1944. Her parents were practicing Catholics with Polish ancestry. Helena`s mother Wanda Matyka Pokomicki was born to Francis Matyka and Pauline Konectzy in 1903 and she was an elementary school teacher. Maryian Pokomichi was a letter carrier having retired as a Sergeant in the US Marine Corps. He had joined the Marine Corps during World War in 1915. He was born in 1896 and had migrated from Poland to the United States in 1911 at the age of fourteen. Wanda Pokomicki`s parents has migrated from Poland to the United States around 1870 settling in Lowell, Massachusetts which was among the first industrial towns in America as the Industrial Revolution spread to America from England. The Polomickis enrolled the bright and beautiful child first in Corpus Christi Elementary School and then the Felician Academy from where she graduated with senior high school diploma in 1962. She was a class leader and had a chance to shake hands with President John F. Kennedy during his Presidential campaign in Detroit. As a child developed love of books and used to carry armloads of them from the local public library on Seven Mile Road in Detroit as she walked home with her older sister Regina. Reading remained a passion until a stroke in 1991. Helena attended University of Detroit before receiving her Associate of Nursing from Northern Essex Community College in 1970 and Bachelor of Nursing from Boston State College in 1975 - both in Massachusetts. She then earned a Master of Science (Nursing Administration) from Pace University in 1983. She was a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts and New York with specialist Certifications in Geriatric and Orthopedic Nursing. During 1970 to 1981 Helena served as an R.N. at Deaconess Hospital and New England Baptist Hospital in Boston and as Director of Health Center at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. From 1981 to January 1991 Helena served as R.N. at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County, New York and Patient Care Coordinator at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York City. Helena and Surendra met in Boston while he was teaching at Northeastern University during the academic year 1972-73. They fell in love at first sight and married on September 12, 1973. They traveled the world including India where Helena got interested in helping children and women in heath and education. Helena suffered a debilitating brain stroke in January 1991 which has left her physically dependent but her thinking mind and caring heart are as sharp, loving and humorous as ever. In 1999 Surendra Kaushik dedicated the Mrs. Helena Kaushik Women`s College in her name in his hometown Malsisar, Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, India cementing America-India relationship in education, caring and giving. Helena is being cared for at home in New York, USA and hundreds of young women are receiving higher education at her college in the village of Gokhri, Post Malsisar, Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, India where none existed before. More than 750 have graduated with B.A., B.Sc., M.A., M.Sc. and B.Ed. of the University of Rajasthan from 2002 to 2010.
