This volume brings together original essays from well-known Indian and Western sociologists written in tribute to André Béteille, one of India’s most distinguished sociologists. As with Béteille’s work, the essays match theory with empirical data, engaging with, extending, and occasionally disputing the arguments put forward in his work over the decades. The essays respond to and reflect the wide range of Béteille’s interests: some are based on intensive fieldwork, others on archival research; some studies focus on individuals, others deal with social classes or communities. While most focus on India, two essays explore inequalities in China and Russia, and Japan and England, respectively. In one way or another, all contributions deal with the relationship between institutions and inequalities in society.
