The story of the Presidential Armies of India is virtually the history of the formation of the Great Indian Army. The East India Company has set up administrative jurisdictions in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata), Madras (now Chennai) and Bombay (now Mumbai), each under a President or a Governor, hence “Presidency”.
The book traces the role of these Presidential Armies and, in particular, their role in putting down the great Bengal Sepoy Mutiny. It traces the origin and progress of the Indian Artillery, the role of Lord Robert Clive, their role on various expeditions, including the ‘march to Bamian’.
For students of military history, particularly that of the Indian Army, it is an essential study.
