This book is in appreciation of the people, the events, and the institutions that have shaped the foundation and psyche of the great city. Each and every one has in some way left a mark on Delhi and helped shape its culture.
Over seven hundred years ago, the celebrated poet and musician, Amir Khusro wrote “If there be a paradise on earth, it is this! It is this! It is this!” More than three centuries later, the same quote was inscribed in the Diwan-i-khas of the Red Fort. We write four hundred years since, realizing that the truth in these lines grows more with every passing day.
