This book is a passionate, fascinating and engaging account of the author’s
travels across the world over a period of 40 years. A wanderlust instilled during
his brief stint as flight purser in Air India (1963-67), took him on official and pleasure
trips to over 300 cities across Europe, Africa and, Latin America and the
Middle East. In India alone, he explored 88 cities. Going beyond the conventional
description of places, it gives an absorbing account of the author’s cross-cultural
experiences in different places (hotels, airports, streets, etc.) and with diverse
people (taxi drivers, airlines crew, hotel attendants, etc), their mindsets, moods,
behavior, and customs. These experiences ranging from amusing to hilarious,
unusual to bizarre have been recounted with a mix of bemusement, delight and
mild sarcasm, as well as with a true traveler’s spirit of enquiry. Thus, the chapters
are not about places but his experiences, for instance with cabbies, in airports,
airlines, hotels, etc. All in all, the work, as the author rightly claims, ‘will trigger…[
one’s] latent passion for travel’, and a lust for seeing and ‘absorbing’ the
world.
