This volume brings together the work of the well-known political scientist Atul Kohli. Written over more than two decades, the essays analyse the evolution and interaction of democracy and development in India between the early 1980s and the present. The focus of analysis is on how an India committed to socialism has been slowly transformed into what many describe as a pro-business ‘India incorporated’.
The essays, though written at different points, share a theoretical and normative unity. They are informed by a state–society framework and make the case for a social democratic model of development in India.
The volume is organized into three sections, each section representing a distinct theme—political change, political economy, and politics and development in select states. The first section unravels the central paradox that characterizes political change in India: democracy has put down firm roots but the quality of governance offered by the democratic state remains low. The second section explores the growing alliance between state and capital in India, which is at the heart of growth acceleration as well as growing inequalities. The final section examines why India’s states continue to exhibit divergent developmental patterns with reference to Bihar, Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. ISBN - 9780195697933
