Lest We Forget aims at being a true record of wars that soldiers and officers of the Indian army have fought over the last fifty years. It chronicles the heroic sacrifices made by them on the battlefield, often fighting at a disadvantage in terms of numbers, equipment and support-disadvantages that they overcame with determination, courage, leadership and skill.
The book presents an account of seven battles from three wars – the war in Kashmir of 1947-48, the Indo-China war of 1962, and the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965. In each case the author’s story is different from the official version. No story, no matter how carefully recorded, can be one hundred per cent correct. However, care has been taken to avoid partiality or prejudice, and to present the truth with as close an attention to facts as possible. War diaries and Digests of Service have been used to arrive at a general gist of each battle, the dates and the timing, but where these were found not to match the reality of an even or situation, hey have been altered. Interview and group discussions have been recorded as insurance against controversy, and in no case has any individual account been accepted or event recorded without confirmation by two or more witnesses.
The book records the truth of these battles in memory of those thousands of men, long since forgotten, who gave their lives and for the sake of those who survived, now in their twilight years.
