Kalidasa whose immorial works have inspired and influenced the later Indian writers ranks foremost among the top poets and play weights of the world. The present work critically examines in the first two Chapters the current anecdota and theories concerning Kalidasa, dispels many misconceptions about him, and puts forward a rational point of view about his life, works and date. The vaxed question of chronological relationship between kalidasa and the Buddhist poet Asvaghosa has been particularly re-examined in the present book which proves conclusively that the latter is indebted to the former for similar ideas and expression. In the next two Chapters it gives a clear, chronological and systematic account of the lyrics, epics and plays of Kalidasa and makes an objective assessment of the gradual development of his poetic and dramatic art. The following Chapter discusses in detail the language, style and imager of Kalidasa and cites with translation a number of selected verses from his works to illustrate the aptness and originality of his imagery. Kalidasa fascinating and imaginative description of Nature is featured in the penultimate Chapter of this book, and its final Chapter of this book, and its final Chapter presents in proper perspective his concept of beauty and love which is some times misunderstood by casual readers.
