This work is the result of authors participation in a cross cultural study of shifting cultivation carried out in five countries of the Asian region-India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand-under the auspices of Unesco`s MAN and the BIOSPHERE (MAB) Programme. A comprehensive over view of shifting cultivation in India followed by an indepth study of a shifting cultivation community is presented in this volume. Part I focuses on the geographical spread of shifting cultivation, demographic distribution and ethnic composition of shifting cultivators, typology of shifting cultivation, review of government policies and programmes and identification of problems that are regarded as nationally important relative to shifting cultivation. Part II is the case study of a shifting cultivation community in Arunachal Pradesh the traditional home of shifting cultivation. The community studied is the Wancho of Tirap district.
