This volume brings together the papers presented at the seminar on the ‘Current Status of Socio-Economic Data’, organized by Indian Council of Social Science Research, after they were revised based on comments made by discussants. They seek to: (i) document as comprehensively as possible the sources and availability of information on different sectors and ocio- economic variables; (ii) assess the quality and reliability of the data as well as their comparability across data-sets and over time; (iii) report on the form in which data are available and the ease with which they can be put into computer-readable formats. C.P. Chandrasekhar is Professor, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His areas of interest include industrialization, development planning, and the experience of developing countries with stablization and structural adjustment. He has recently co-authored a monograph titled Crisis as Conquest: Learning from East Asia. He is an economic columnist for Frontline (a fortnightly newsmagazine) and Business Line (a financial daily). Jandhyala B.G. Tilak is Senior Fellow and Head, Educational Finance Unit, National Institute of Educational Planning and Development, New Delhi. His research interests are the economics of education and the financing of education. He is the editor of Journal of Educational Planning and Administration.
