This book documents an event that was organised to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the conception of Chandigarh, one of the most imporatant architectural and urban planning experiments of he century. Inaugurated by the President of India, K. R. Narayanan, the seminar issues focussed on the impoact of Chandigarh and Le Corbusier`s work on the direction of architecture, planning, theory and practice, the process of conceptualisation and design and realisation of the city paln. The leading architects from around the world gathered in Chandigarh to exchange ideas and analyse Corbusier`s architecture and contribution of other architerctrs and engineers who worked on the project including Drew, Jenneret, Fry and the Indian team. Three days of deliberations covered in the seminar papers include the impact of Le Corbusier`s architecture on socio-economic realities of a devloping nation and of Chandigarh in particular, future options for structuring the growth of the city and defining the direction of development and expansion. The legacy left behind by the transformation of Corbusier`s ideas over the last few decades and the isues that arise from the planning of Chandigarh make a fascinating study in the development of a nation.
